WHAT IS AFROYAP?

The new hub for diaspora culture

AfroYap is a digital home for the African diaspora. A place to connect over the things we already love and to have the conversations we've been having in group chats and dorm rooms for years.

The music. The food. The slang. The movies. The arguments about whose mom cooks it better. The questions about identity that don't get answered on mainstream platforms because mainstream platforms weren't built to ask them.

This is where all of that lives in one place.

Built for the youth, designed to grow up with us

AfroYap is aimed at college aged and people slightly older right now. The Discover screen is where you find friends who share your background and your interests, whether they're at your school or across the world. Forums and Tribes are where you go deeper, joining communities organized around the cultures, traditions, and conversations that actually matter to you.

But the long vision is bigger.

AfroYap is designed to eventually become the place where older intellectuals, elders, and storytellers share history with younger generations. Where voice-supported features let a professor in Lagos pass oral Yoruba history down to a college student in Houston. Where the cultural transmission that used to happen in person, across schools, porches and barbershops, can happen utilizing the internet.

A place to meet, a place to talk, a place to think

The platform is built around a few simple ideas.

Yaps are posts. Short, sharp, sometimes silly, sometimes serious. They're how conversations start.

Shouts are how a Yap travels. When something resonates, you amplify it to your network so the right people see it.

Forums and Tribes are communities. Spaces organized around shared interests, regions, schools, or causes. Forums are public discussion. Tribes are more intimate. Both are places to find people who think like you.

Anonymous posts make room for the conversations people aren't comfortable having under their name yet. Identity questions, mental health, family stuff, the things that need a little distance before they can be spoken out loud.

Discover is the engine of finding your people. Not random suggestions. Real connections built on shared background and shared interest.

What makes AfroYap different

This is not another social platform with a Black aesthetic painted over it.

It is built for the diaspora by people also in the born in the diaspora. All of it reflects what we've actually been asking for. A space that acknowledges our shared upbringings, cultures, and unique shared memories seriously without disrespecting it. A space that respects how different the diaspora actually is, while making room for everything we share.

AfroYap is what happens when the youth take on the task of reconnecting to our cultures, our histories, and each other, and do it the Gen Z way. Fast, online, with humor, with substance, and with our own people in the room.

Who this is for

AfroYap is for the second generation kid trying to understand the country their parents left.

For anyone with African heritage who has ever felt the gap between who they are and what they know about who they are.

And for the people drawn to this culture from outside it. The students, the partners, the friends, the lovers of the music and the literature and the history. The ones who want to participate honestly and learn from the source.

You are not late. You are not less than. You are not the only one. This is where we start to fill it in, together.

Our vision

The long term vision is to build the digital homeland for the global African diaspora. A place where students find each other now, and where elders teach the next generation later. Where the music and the slang and the food and the inside jokes live alongside the harder conversations about who we are and where we're going.

In a world where distance, history, and disconnection have done their work for centuries, AfroYap is built on one belief.

The culture is not lost. We just hadn't built our own place to find it yet.

Welcome home.
